About Us

First things first:
Our number one priority is to provide good, quality, correct, and useful content to those who are interested in improving their English language communication skills. Content here is clean, as in doesn't include sexual innuendo, base language, or even outright profanity. Those things have their place in all language study, but this is not the forum for it. Surely by now you've heard at least on one (or a hundred) occasion a student using English profanity or even something that may seem as harmless as "Oh my god!" which can be, and is, found distasteful and crass by a large number of native English speakers. As is common, the problem lies not in the knowing, but in the using. Term these kinds of expressions as extremely subject to discretion upon when and where and to whom one might use them. That's why we've tried to incorporate language that is suitable for most if not all situations and circumstances, be it talking to your mother, priest, your best friend, or, as is the case for many students, native English speakers they are meeting for the first time.

A short note, or disclaimer if you like, about grammar:
While grammarians might cringe at an occassional mangling of what's considered proper, emphasis has been more heavily placed on acceptable and common usage, which is after all the basis for rules of grammar, in order to maintain a more relaxed atmosphere for conversation.

Some suggestions for teachers for uses for this site:
If you are looking for some new material for your classes or just want something to do to break the routine, WebE4u.com has just what you need. Also, it can be beneficial to you as an instructor to be aware of and promote other resources for improving language ability. No one book, no one teacher, no one series of tapes will create that elusive creature, a fluent English speaker. That includes this site. However, using multiple resources on a daily basis will greatly increase the chances for students to improve their ability, faster, more easily, and most important of all, more interestingly.

Each week we will post a new word game. Currently the puzzles alternate from wordsearch to crosswords. You can encourage your students to visit the site and play the games for themselves. After which they can ask you questions about words, explanations, or other uses for new vocabulary.

Although all of the content is original and copyrighted material created for or by the operators of this site, you are free to print the games and puzzles and copy them for use in your class. We do ask that you leave the WebE4U logos and URL's intact when doing so. The clues for the crosswords are designed to elicit discussion so this could be either a short exercise of them working the puzzle alone or in teams or expanded into a discussion of the clues or even asking them to tell what they know about the answers they've found. This could include experience discussions, peripheral knowledge of the new material or related items, or even writing sentences using the new vocabulary.

Expressions, Conversations, and Quotes:
Week by week there are new expressions available through our newsletter with a follow-up on the web site with recordings of the practice conversation. Each conversation is used to illustrate a situation where the expression can be used and reinforce the new material. This is usually achieved by keeping the conversations short and centered on the key expression. For the intermediate to advanced learners there will be very little new vocabulary in the surrounding conversations which should build confidence and make them more comfortable. For beginners, the sentences are usually short enough that it doesn't take a great deal of time for them to master the new materials.

Again, these are designed with discussion and practice in mind. After you have ascertained the students' understanding of a particular exercise, you can then ask them to come up with other situations, conversations that might allow them to use the same expressions. Included in the example conversations are a good supply of everyday language as well that is suitable for incorporation into new conversations and situations. Because a translation has been provided, little time should be necessary for students to get the meaning so they will be able to move quickly on to applying the new material. Conversations can be done in groups or pairs with creating longer or new conversations built upon each particular exercise used for expansion.

A note about the translations:
Translation has been a barrier to English learning for some time. The translations found here were done in a manner to best express the meanings of the corresponding Korean to English language, more of a meaning for meaning than word for word. That is, sometimes there are direct translations and sometimes there are substitute translations when meaning is unclear or the translated sentence is too unnatural. Hopefully, this will aid in the students' abilities to more quickly understand the content and context of the new material and feel confident about the meaning and proper usage. The translated explanations should provide enough information to insure understanding where a direct or indirect translation of the expression might not.

Hangul and Korean:
A rudimentary ability to read Hangul will allow English speakers an opportunity to increase their Korean vocabulary and conversation skills as well. With exclusion of some of the more direct translations of the key expressions the remaining portions of the translated conversations are in common, everyday Korean. Learning these few phrases and sentences each week can greatly improve both your ability to communicate in Korean and to better understand the difficulties your students are facing in trying to assimilate this slippery language we call English.

Comments, complaints, or questions?
Let us know what you or your students are saying or thinking about the site and content. It is the best way that students' and instructors' needs can be met. If you have a suggestion for a future expression or even a theme for a puzzle you would like to see, please let us know. It is best in learning a language to be learning at least a portion of the things a student wants to know, not just the things textbooks, teachers, and standardized tests deem appropriate. We hope you have fun with this material and that it can in some way lighten the considerable load of finding and preparing new, useful, and interesting materials for your classes, or, at the very least, provide yet one more venue for your students who are actively trying to improve their skills outside of your class.
